Introduction –
Some of the awards won by Ankhon Dekhi include Filmfare Award for Best Story, Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actor ( Sanjay Mishra ) and Filmfare Critics Award for Best Film ( Rajat Kapoor ).
The film is set in old Delhi’s crowded residential ghetto known for its naked electricity wires, captivating terraces, tight lanes and a place where everyone knows everyone. Raje Bauji ( Sanjay Mishra ) is one its residents and works for a travel agency. Bauji lives in an extended family which includes his wife ( Amma ), his brother Rishi Chacha ( Rajat Kapoor ) and their kids, including Bauji’s grown up daughter.
Synopsis –
All is well till one day his daughter’s affair with a boy named Ajju ( Namit Das ) surfaces. Labeled as a “good for nothing fellow” and a hooligan, the family confronts the boy along with the police. Bauji quickly realizes that Ajju is a decent boy, and completely different from he’d heard about him. The incident triggers behavioral change. Bauji declares that he will only believe in things which he has experienced first-hand.
Thus begins the comical journey of Bauji which is interpreted by different people with a different prism – while some call it “Male Menopause” syndrome, others label it as a “Senile Phase” which every man of his age experiences. However, Bauji uses the term “Believing through experience”.
From quitting his job because he has to lie about cities and travel destinations which he’s never visited or experienced to a recurring dream of flying across the sky, free from responsibilities and relationship baggage, Bauji is actually undergoing psychological metamorphosis. Unfortunately what begins as series of comical events ends on a tragic note.
Analysis –
Powerful performance by Sanjay Mishra, perfect casting, true-to-life settings and flawless direction are some of the highlights of this film. Rajat Kapoor’s direction as mentioned is impeccable while the story / concept refreshing and different from the regular rabble. Seema Pahwa is a joy to watch. She impressed us yet again with her uncanny, natural performance. Cinematography is top notch, adding layers of emotions and transformations through optimized lens, angles and light filters.
