Introduction –
Unlike Episode 1 which had some meat in the story, Finisher has absolutely little substance. Loosely based on the infamous gaming era where gamers’ were coerced to commit online suicide, this film introduces another facet of a popular game which influences them to kill people in cold blood. It is also true that these games affect people differently. While some take it as a source of entertainment some get too involved. Prateek is one of them.
Synopsis –
The Episodic Legal Series – Finisher
This time the conflict revolves around a nineteen year engineering student Prateek, an introvert and a video game fanatic. His fascination for a particularly horrifying and violent game lands him in big trouble. In a bid to beat the leading scorer of the game, and also to prove that he is the best in the virtual world if not in the real one he sets up an insane task.
The task will not only fetch him the title but also a reward of $100,000. That night Prateek hails a cab, slips on the special glares / glasses that will allow him to complete the mission. He then requests the cab driver to stop in the middle of an empty street and then brutally kills him with a dagger.
Kashaf ( Shriya Pilgaonkar ) along with her partner Vandhana ( Sugandha Garg ) take up the case to defend Prateek. Shriya feels that Prateek should be pardoned because he was under the influence of a violent game and rigged ( compromised ) dark glasses which forces human brain to do evil things. She tries to convince the Judge ( Niraj Sah ) that Prateek committed the murder under the influence of wearable device which prompted him to do the horrendous act. On the other hand, the wife of taxi driver is seeking justice.
In between, Deepak and Shriya catch up to settle their differences. A new character is also introduced in the form of Shubhangi ( Namrata Sheth ). She is Shubhrat ( Pranay Pachauri’s ) cousin and the new member of Deepak’s team. Shubhrat’s dislike is quite visible in this episode. ( Satish Kaushik ) the liquor baron is also introduced for the subsequent episode. He is Kitu’s ( Deepak Kalra ) father.
Analysis –
We will keep the analysis short. There is nothing special about the direction, cinematography, story or the performances. Every element of this episode is literally cast in mediocrity. The pacey decision by the Judge is once again a topic of debate. The trouble with these short episodes is that everything is narrated and not actually shown. It robs off the excitement, the intimacy and the ambience. This typically happens because the scenes are cut down to fit a rigid time frame.
