Introduction –
These days, we rarely get to see films based on animals. Nawab is a deviation from the regular themes and popular subjects. It has a refreshing take on someone who is not really a dog lover. However, at Baiscope, one of the best indie film review websites & OTT / Web series reviews platform we love animals, especially these adorable, loyal, sensitive and protective canines.
Synopsis –
Nikhil’s ( Aparshakti Khurana ) wife Devika ( Geetika Vidya ) is about to dump him for a lucrative work assignment in the U.K. After the short argument which interestingly ends in Devika’s favor, the question of dog’s ( Nawab ) custody comes up. Nikhil tells her that it was her idea to get a dog and therefore it is her responsibility. Devika counters his remark saying that it was “their” decision and walks out of the house, leaving Nawab in his company.
Nikhil wants to get rid of Nawab
Nikhil tries various methods to get rid of Nawab. He woos his sister-in-law ( Maria Goretti ), even dumps him on a secluded road but fails each time. Finally, he decides to take him to the dog care / shelter home. The woman in charge accuses Nikhil and people like him being insensitive. She tells him just because the dog has outgrown or sheds hair doesn’t mean they have to be put in a shelter. She also questions “Would you do that to your own child?” She then shows Nikhil some of the other occupants including “Cuba” a beautiful dog who once lived with a wealthy family.
When the tour ends, the woman asks him why he didn’t want Nawab. Nikhil says that he plans to commit suicide and therefore looking for someone who can take good care of his dog. The lady looks at Nikhil for a while before agreeing to accommodate Nawab in her shelter. Meanwhile, Nikhil peers at the dog enclosures and then heads to the furthest section. Cuba’s barks grow louder as Nikhil moves closer.

Analysis –
In just under 10 minutes, Nawab covers a gamut of bonds and ever changing emotions. In spite of not being a “dog” person Nihkil shows responsibility and sensitivity. The film also highlights the fact that there are people who abandon their pets without remorse or guilt. Nawab has all the elements of a meaningful short film, including shot composition, direction, camera angles and locations. Aparshakti shines while Maria Goretti and Mallika Dua are a treat to watch.
