Introduction –
Jahaan is a cute romantic short film which revolves around two characters – Ghazal ( Mrunal Thakur) and Inder ( Avinash Tiwary ). The young couple apparently newlywed, live in a nondescript house. They appear happy and very much in love. Nonetheless, within their cute arguments, infallible bond and their omnipresent smiles something seems out of place.
Synopsis –
Ghazal is upset when she sees the “To Let” board hung out their house by the broker. Inder consoles her. He tells her that no one will rent their home, their house. That the broker has tried to let out the premises for the past three years but failed every time.
The couple then engages in small talk, blithely love-laced verbal fights. They are about to kiss each other when the front door opens and the broker ( Gopal Datt ) steps inside along with a family ( Client ) – husband, wife and a kid. Wearing a big smile, the broker moves around the house bragging about the largeness and the airy ambience. However, his sales sermon is broken by the client ( husband ) who tells him that it is the same house where a couple of murders took place.
The broker tries to convince the client with another sales pitch, however the client’s wife says she is experiencing bad vibes and the place is not good as per Vastu. The broker says that they need to change their beliefs and adopt a progressive mindset, but his wise words fall on deaf ears.
Check out Jahaan, the award winning short film to know why no one wants to live in a house where Ghazal and Inder seem so happy.
Analysis –
Although Jahaan is quite predictable after the first half, it does provide amazing cinematography and music, especially the song “zara paas baithe zara muskuraaye”. What we loved about the film is the chemistry between Mrunal Thakur and Avinash Tiwary. The film tries to touch several sensitive aspects of our society & humans such as inter-religious marriage, supernatural happenings, honor killings and cultural beliefs. It is this mash up of subjects which makes Jahaan a genre-independent short film.
